Evert Verhagen PhD FECSS (1976) is a human movement scientist and epidemiologist. He is employed as an associate professor at the Department of Public and Occupational Health of the VU University Medical Center and the EMGO+ Institute for Health and Care Research in Amsterdam. He chairs the department’s research theme ‘Sports, Lifestyle and Health’ consisting of about 24 research projects and 26 fte in research and supporting staff. His main research topics are: 1. Prevention of sports and physical activity related injuries (including cost-effectiveness and implementation issues); and 2. Physical activity promotion integrated in everyday life. He is currently supervising 15 (inter-)national PhDs and two post-docs, divided across these two topics. Within the department he also fulfills teaching responsibilities for the faculties of Medicine, Human Movement Sciences and Health Sciences, and individual supervision in research training.

He has (co)authored 77 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to a number of books and is the co-editor of the first ever handbook on sports injury research methodology. Additionally, he is an associate editor of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sports, senior associate editor of the British Journal of Sports Medicine, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Athletic Training.
